APi Construction earns NIA Safety Award

In April, the National Insulation Association (NIA) announced that APi Construction is the winner of the 2008 Theodore H. Brodie distinguished Safety Award for medium size companies (100,000 to 1,000,000 man-hours). APi Vice Presidents, Jerry Pederson and Mark Udager, accepted the award at NIA's 54th Annual Convention.

The Brodie award is NIA's top industry honor for outstanding dedication to safety performance, and it is designed to recognize members who take proactive steps to implement safe work environments.

"We value everyone's commitment to safety at all of the job sites across the country," Pederson said. "We all want to get the job done when we go to work, but our first priority is to have every craftsperson go home injury free every day."

Injury rate data, company safety programs and policies, and a company safety statement help determine award winners.

APi's safety program, STEPS (Striving Toward Excellence and Professionalism in Safety), promotes safety culture awareness throughout the company. STEPS is a living program that constantly seeks ways of improvement to reduce the risk of injuries for all employees.

Injury prevention initiatives implemented over the past three years resulted in a1.9 OSHA Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) in 2008. Initiatives include a daily stretch program, the use of blunt-head insulation pins, advanced eye protection, and comprehensive daily huddles to encourage safety alertness.

The Theodore H. Brodie Distinguished Safety Award is named after the former NIA president in recognition of his dedication and commitment to safety.
