APi has adopted the following best safety practices to guide our journey to zero.
- Demonstrated management commitment
- Staffing for safety
- Safety planning — pre-project / pre-task
- Safety training and education
- Worker involvement and participation
- Recognition and rewards
- Subcontractor management
- Accident / Incident reporting and investigation
- Drug and Alcohol testing
- Demonstrated Management Commitment
- Project management actively participates in risk assessment at the time of bid and evaluates safety as part of the process from the very beginning. On-site, pre-job safety evaluations are conducted to identify any areas of concern and then coordinated wit the safety department. All management personnel are required to attend annual training, weekly safety meetings, and all other safety briefings. Management also conducts jobsite audits for safety performance, compliance with applicable rules and policies, as well as follow-up for corrective action as applicable.
- Staffing for Safety
- API employs a full-time Safety Director and two full-time Safety Coordinators. Each field supervisor is delegated site specific safety responsibilities and has oversight duties for the overall safety program. Additional safety professionals are used as needed for site requirements.
- Planning — Pre-Project / Pre-Task
- A safety plan is developed for each new job. All safety concerns are discussed and responsibilities are explained. These meetings are conducted with management, site supervision, and the safety department. It is the responsibility of the area foreman to assess the tasks of the day, for their crew and hold a daily huddle to brief the crew.
- Safety Training and Education
- All Superintendents and Management personnel are required to attend annual safety training. Topics include OSHA 10 hour, CPR, First Aid, Fall Protection, Drug Testing and other topics. On-site training sessions are also conducted for all foremen and company employees. A documented orientation is given to all new hires covering company rules and site requirements. Toolbox talks are done weekly and daily huddles are conducted to continue to refresh safety training and awareness. Safety Professionals al; carry OSAH 500 cards and are required to continue education.
- Worker Involvement and Participation
- Involvement and participation is encouraged at all times. Solutions to common concern are developed with input form employees. Employees also participate in all meetings and time is set aside to discuss any issues or concerns of employees.
- Recognition and Rewards
- A safety incentive program is in place to reward a commitment to safety. Employees are given points based on safe performance or points taken away for unsafe behaviors. Injuries are tracked by supervisor and foreman and those supervisors with the lowest rates are recognized at the annual training session.
- Subcontractor Management
- If API does hire sub contractors they are put through a pre-qualification process to identify contractors that have a commitment to safety.
- Accident / Incident Reporting and Investigation
- All incidents are investigated. The focus of all investigations is the root cause and prevention of future occurrences. Results of these investigations that could affect other jobsites are communicated to all employees with Hazard Alerts. Supervisors of sites where recordable injuries occur must provide a detailed report to company management.
- Drug and Alcohol Testing
- API Construction performs pre-employment, post incident, for-cause, random and follow-up testing as recommended by Substance Abuse professionals. API conducts a 5-panel test and all results are reviewed by a Medical Review Officer (MRO). Employee assistance is made available to all employees who seek assistance.
